Libya Conflict
So our president, and the world for that matter, seems stumped on what to do about unrest in Libya. Let me back up for a second for those of you who haven’t heard, have been living under Iraq, have no radio, or get your news via courier pigeon.
Not too long ago the middle east started imploding. There were uprisings and protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Mumbai, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Partridge, and Pair Tree. More and more people wanted leadership in their country that listened more to them. You know, more democracy. Sort of like (continue reading…)
3 weeks in Korea
What a trip. What a place. After 3 weeks I’m decent at reading Hangul (Korean written). As it turns out, Hangul is phonetic. All this time I had thought it was (continue reading…)
Booms away from Planes and Boats
A while back I was on this oil spill fix tangent. And one idea that I had that I never bothered to get out there was this one. I believe that this idea along with the oil parachute/chimney could have contained about 98% of the oil once these systems were deployed, and I think they could have been deployed in a few days. (continue reading…)
Work Work Work
There’s been a lot of discussion lately about unemployment insurance and the debt and the current tax rates being extended and other budget issues. All this political blathering reminded me of an idea I had a long time ago (long before I knew how to use Excel or what the Bureau of Labor Statistics was) and now that this topic has poped back up into popular discussion, I thought it would be a good time to check the math on that idea and see what came up. So I did some number crunching… (continue reading…)
Feel (up) Safe While Flying
The holidays are here, and with it comes traveling, and with traveling comes new and improved nonsense at the air ports. Yes weather your on the no fly list or flying to everyone on the list, this is the season where the TSA gets to debut it newest way to make you feel safe. And this time they’re doing this by feeling what you thought was safe.
FDA Bans Accountability!
So this has been getting a lot of news lately. It all started with a study by Dr. Mary Clair O’Brien of Wake Forest University (herein after “crazy lady”) who conducted a survey of college students and found that students who mixed energy drinks with alcohol were: more likely to be injured, more likely to take advantage of someone sexually, more likely to be taken advantage of sexually, more likely to ride with someone who is intoxicated, and more likely to drive while intoxicated.
Fixing the Housing Crisis and thus the Economy
Long time no write! I know it’s been a while. I wanted to write, but with the only news being political news about the election, and me trying hard to make this a blog about issues and not about politics, I thought I would wait until everything had done cooled off. Well… everything had done cooled off.
So I was watching the new and I saw something interesting. This lady was on a hunger strike to protest her house being foreclosed on. I am not going to comment on rather a hunger strike would be a good thing or bad thing for this woman consideration her current agreement with gravity and how long this could last as a result, but it did get me to thinking. This is not going to achieve anything. The only way this would help this woman keep her house was if she was spending a house payment on food every month and, NEWS FLASH, you wont last a month without eating. But cuddos for making an effort, and taking up the form of protest exercised by the likes of Gandhi and Irish prisoners. Of course they had constant contact with the media who were reporting on major issues not just some nut job, and they were protesting something that mattered to people other than themselves, and people cared about them before they started the hunger strike, and they did it by sitting down and conserving their energy rather than making a sign and picketing people driving by, and they were protesting injustices rather than breach of contracts, and they had people to help them do it because that can be a horrible way to die, but aside from all that… GOOD JOB LADY.
I believe that many stupid people will likely kill themselves if not interrupted. Normally I would relish the opportunity to see Darwinism of this clarity in action, but seeing as none of my friends are enough of a news junkie like me to take bets on how long she’ll last, and we still do have a housing problem in this country with a newly elected and likely more grid locked government, and no one cares about her so I doubt I’ll even be able to watch this train wreck even if I wanted to… I guess I’ll help get us out of this mess. Besides, now I can claim the moral high road and say that I support people who use non violence means to protest in a manner sort of, kind of, not really at all like Gandhi.
So the economic trouble we have in this county started with housing. Banks lent money they didn’t have to people who couldn’t pay it back. Both parties took a gamble on the other one and they both lost. Don’t tell me that people were tricked into purchasing these homes. If the person in the house is making payments, and referes to it as their house they knew what they were doing, they weren’t tricked into anything, they made a bad decision. The bankers who didn’t verify income knew what they were doing, and didn’t care because they were going to sell the loan off to be broken up into tranches in a few days anyway. Both parties wanted the deal to happen so both parties were more than happy to turn a blind eye to the details or the real risks that they were assuming.
Now that the deal has gone bad both parties get exactly what they don’t want. The bank gets another house in a flooded market, gets to sell the house at a low rate and thus lower the rate of all the other houses that they now own and lower the value of all the others that they hold a claim against, and the bank gets to eat the loss. The former home owner gets a huge mark on their credit and gets to find another place to live that hopefully will accept them even with there new found credit rating. And we the people get to watch this in horror wondering why these morons made this deal in the first place, and we get to hope that the government doesn’t bail both of them out. And the crazy lady gets to wonder why her hunger strike isn’t working.
The first thing we do stop being a victim and start taking responsibility. Once we’ve done that we will realize that this is not something that is happening to us, it is in fact something that we have caused and are causing. Now that we realize that we are causing it we can take control of it. And here is how we do that.
***WARNING, MATH & FINANCE CONTENT***
Lets say that someone owes 100K on a 200K home and they are no longer able to make the full payments. Heck lets take it one step farther and say that they are no longer able to make any payments. Now what if instead of making payments in cash they make payments in principle. Instead of making a payment in cash toward a loan the bank accepts payment in ownership of the home. So lets say that the bank takes 25% ownership of the home in payment. Now the bank owns 50K worth of the house and the owner only owes on the remaining 75% minus whatever equity they have in the home. (This could be done on a monthly payment basis, but we’ll use these numbers in this example.) Now the principal is lower so the payments can be lower, and even if the home owner completely pays off the loan, they will only own 75% of the home while the bank will own the remaining 25%. If that too complicated, think of it like a temporary-midstream-reverse-mortgage-paid-by-the-bank-to-themselves-on-behalf-of-the-lendee-in-exchange-of-a-loan-repayment. Or, for short, TMRMPBTBTTOBOTLIEOALR, pronounced “trumpet bat bottle o’ air”(guess who barely passed english in highschool).
Now the person living in the house gets to keep living in the house, gets to keep a better credit score, and gets to make lower payments.
The market for houses stabilizes and the values stop plummeting because of all the foreclosed houses on the market so both parties win because they both own real estate.
The bank gets to claim a capital investment in the property on their taxes or claim the ownership towards minimal holdings, when it’s sold, claim the loss as an expenditure in terms of operations or the gain as a capital gain, which is taxed at a significantly lower tax rate.
And the crazy lady gets to end her hunger strike.
Now a couple of things can happen.
You can try to say trumpet bat bottle o’ air in a conversation about how to turn the economy around while trying to keep a straight face.
The home owner wishes to own the house in full. Now the primary home owner (individual) can purchase the remaining 25% of the home from the bank for an amount that they both agree on, for example… the NEW current market value.
The bank may have the right to inspect the premises on a somewhat regular basis to ensure that their investment is being taken care of, after all they have joint custody.
If the house is sold, the bank has to approve the amount for which the house is sold for and receives 25% of the revenue due to their ownership from the sale of the house, not to mention the bank would have a very good chance on securing the loan for the new buyer.
If the value of the house has dropped before the trumpet bat bottle o’ air has begun, then that can be taken into consideration with regards to the amount exchanged in the trumpet bat bottle o’ air. It could easily be adjusted to take the current value of the home, equity, interest remaining, and all other parts of the loan and market into consideration.
Both parties bet on a risk that didn’t turn out. Now both parties can share the risk to mitigate the loss.
In the mean time the bank can bundle up all these parts of houses equity and sell off tranches into the market. Sort of how we got into this mess, only this time they are selling home equity rather than a home loan. If the housing market has bottomed out, and many people think it has, and this will help it bottom out, this is a pretty good investment.
Everybody wins. You can thank me later or you can come up with a better name than trumpet bat bottle o’ air and comment below. And speaking of house payments… is anybody hiring?
Koran Burning
For those of you who haven’t heard from everyone shouting about this, there is a Florida pastor Terry Jones who is going to burn thousands of copies of the Koran on 9/11. He’s calling it international burn a Koran day. Not quite sure how many other countries if any will be participating to make it “international”, but in a country that only allows itself to participate in the “World” Series I’m not too surprised about the title. At any rate, there’s been a lot of hoopla about this shmuck. Everyone has chimed in from the mayor of New York to Angelina Jolie to multiple US Generals. The general consensus is that yes, he is allowed to do that because it’s protected by the First Amendment, but it’s also a stupid, bone headed, moronic, assholish, short sighted, ignorant, arrogant, narcissistic, provocative, appalling thing to do.
As a general rule of thumb, if Nazi Germany tried it, and it’s not the autobahn, it’s a bad idea. This includes: national socialism, eugenics, gun registration, genocide, unnecessarily fighting a war on 2 fronts, trying to make an atom bomb with heavy water, not building a delta wing stealth bomber, mounting a pistol on a helmet, thinking Italy would make a good war ally, assuming that your encryption technology is unbreakable, and book burning just to name a few. Does he have a first amendment right to do this? Absolutely. And I have a First Amendment right to say that Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center located at 5805 Northwest 37th street in Gainesville FL 32653 where the phone number is (352)371-2487 is as bad those who burn bibles. He has a right to say what he wants and do what he wants with his property and I have the right to say what I want and publish publicly available information. This is a free country after all which includes our right to be stupid.
I don’t think that I need to go into all the detail about why this is anything but helpful. This is a precarious time with US muslim relations around the world, tempers are already hot due to the muslim center near ground zero, we are a country that believes in freedom of religion, imitating the Nazis is a bad plan. But that’s not what caught my attention about all the news about Terry Jones. What caught my attention was the lack of another name. The name of Charles Merrill. Who is Charles Merrill? Well he’s an “artist” although I’ve made better art while failing miserably to get Photo Shop to do what I want it to do. If you think I’m kidding, go to merrillcharles.com to see what I mean. At least he doesn’t call himself a webmaster, his site sucks. He is also the gay widower of the daughter of one of the founders of Johnson and Johnson who calles him self a self made millionaire. But the main reason that I know the name of Charles Merrill is because he burned a copy of the Koran. And while I say “burned” Charles called it “performance art”. And by “performance art” he means in an undisclosed location somewhere in Chicago with no audience. And while I say “Koran” Mr. Merrill calles it a “terrorist manual” because it says homosexuality is wrong. And by “copy” I mean a one of a kind hand written hand illustrated version of the Koran that was a gift to his dead wife from the king of Jordan that’s estimated value was $60.000. And he then calles himself an iconoclast. I have a hard time thinking of what to say after that.
Okay, there are so many things wrong with this. Shouldn’t an artist be in favor of expression rather than censorship? Even if we expand art to include destruction, like demolitions artists who take down buildings. The Anarchist Cook Book is a terrorist manual. Steel This Book is a terrorist manual. If your art is suppose to be the destruction of terrorists manuals why not destroy those. Unless of course you’re simply choosing to destroy things that you don’t like because they disagree with your life style and then getting sympathy on your side by tagging those things with in vogue terms like terrorism and anti homosexuality while dodging the critics by calling it a work of art rather than a temper tantrum. And then having the audacity to call himself an iconoclast. Iconoclasts destroy icons not texts, and they do so because they feel what is represented is sacred and creating an image of it cheapens it and promotes the worship of the icon rather than what it was meant to represent. If he was truly an iconoclast he would have blown up the set of Project Runway or pissed on every rainbow and pink triangle he found because he’s gay or because he considers himself an artist burned down The Louvre, or better still because he’s an atheist, shredded copies of Origin of Species, glued shut stacks of math books, and painted over images of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Then he would be an iconoclast.
I’m not muslim. Yet I find both of these taint scrapings who are passing as humans utterly disgusting and offensive. And I am not easily offended.
Maybe we should ask Charles Merrill and Terry Jones what they think of each other and see if the rotten eggs will call the fecal matter stinky. Terry Jones is a press whore so he shouldn’t be too hard to get hold of. I’m not sure how to contact Charles. After all he does something in private he calls it performance art. And there is no contact on his clearly homemade website. On the other hand a whois search for his site did give me some information. For example, the admin listed for his site has the exact name with the same spelling as Charles Merrill himself. And the phone number listed on that whois search, (828)685-9673, is a land line remarkably close to the location of the North Carolina PO box listed as the address for the site and Mr. Merrill lives in that part of NC. Surely these two know each other, and surely Charles the admin with the email address charles6@aol.com knows Mr. Merrill the taint scrape “artist”. I’ve been unable to get a hold of Charles to see if he can put me in contact with Mr. Merrill. You might have better luck.
Now I’m not saying that anyone should harass Charles and/or Mr. Miller and/or Terry Jones. I’m just trying to get a better understanding of their thought process if they have any. From looking at Mr. Miller’s site it’s clear that he is a world traveler. World traveler’s tend to sleep at odd hours just like website admins like Charles. Maybe someone would have better luck contacting them at unusual hours of the night. All I do know is that these two clearly think alike somehow and clearly different than the rest of us. And I try to expose my self to new ways of thinking. Please do what you can to help me understand what these guys were thinking.
Open Minded
To me describing someone as narrow minded always sounded like they were well focused. Describing someone as wide minded sounded like they were easily distracted. But generally calling someone narrow minded is the same as calling them stupid. It’s like calling someone dull. Someone that’s dull is dumb and slow, while someone that’s sharp is smart and witty. But sharp is more narrow than dull, yet sharp is good and narrow is bad… I don’t know. I didn’t invent English; I just try and use it as best I can.
But there is one term I would like to make perfectly clear. Because this term is starting to change it’s meaning in a bad way. I keep hearing this term. This term is starting to get on my nerves. It’s mostly used when describing what someone isn’t and yet what everyone conceders them selves to be. Open minded. It’s like everyone is open minded but everyone else is close minded. Now, open-minded is a good term. Well, it used to be a good term. So I guess I should say “Then, open-minded was a good term.” Back when it meant “willing to conceder” rather than “accepting what was said.”
I believe it was Mark Twain who said it best “It takes a keen mind to entertain an idea without accepting it.” Someone that is very open-minded has a willingness and an ability to conceder just about any concept presented to them. You know, take it out of the box, read the directions, check the warranty, see if it works as well as advertised, and then decide whither to keep it, return it, or sell it on EBay. That’s what open-minded used to mean. That’s what it should mean. But that’s not what it does mean. Now days when someone says “you’re not being open minded” it usually means “you’re not accepting what I’m telling you.”
“You agree with affirmative action don’t you?”
“No, I don’t actually.”
“Well you’re just not being open-minded.”
“Yes, I am. I considered it. The answer is no. I didn’t like it when it was affirmative actions, because hiring or not hiring someone based on race seems like regressive actions, I didn’t like it when it was called equal opportunity, because it was about equal result not opportunity, and I don’t like it now when it’s called diversity, because there are better things to be diverse about than melanin.”
“Well then how can you call yourself open-minded?”
“I’m open-minded because I considered it. And when it didn’t work with the rest of my beliefs, like equality, I rejected it. It doesn’t seem to have enough merit to change them. I am plenty open-minded. You should be less omni-accepting.” Because there’s a difference! And if you keep emphasizing how open-minded you are, I’ve got a 12 gauge that could make you even more than open-minded, you could be open-skulled as well. Not to mention wide-minded, well-grounded, and scatter-brained.
And why are we only suppose to be open-minded toward things that are politically correct? When was the last time you heard that we should be more open-minded in the different ways of serving clubbed baby seal. Or lethal injection is too pleasant of a way for a serial killer to be executed. We need to be more open-minded towards the methods used during the Spanish Inquisition. Or are you only open minded towards things that are socially acceptable. Maybe I hate the terms PC and open-minded equally, so they’re stuck together in my head, but I am considering that as a possibility so at least that makes me open-minded.
If you’re open to consider ideas, that makes you truly open-minded. If you just accept something because it’s there, that makes you omni-accepting not open-minded. If you just agree with everything your told without considering it, you’re not open-minded, you’re not close minded, you’re… easily programmed. People that keep calling them selves open-minded are yes men, or excuse me, yes persons that have the intellectual capacity of a door knob. When you listen to these people speak it sounds like a four year old operating a sound board from the Brady Bunch. If other people’s thoughts were food, they’d be the gluttons that gorge them selves at the all you can eat country kitchen buffet. Then show you what they’ve learned because they think that if they like the taste of it you must like the sight of it. The people that you look at and wonder how they could possibly be hungry because you sure as hell aren’t now. They’re not healthy, they’re disgusting. No body likes being with those people. Actually being open-minded is more like the men’s bathroom. Just because it’s open, doesn’t mean everyone should go in, or that everyone’s welcome in for that matter. It’s not that women aren’t good enough; it’s just… not the place for them to go. They should go somewhere else.
You have to be considerate and restrictive. If you’re not willing to consider something then nothing new can ever come into your life. If you’re not restrictive on the things you accept you start believing things that blatantly contradict each other. I do not believe that all life deserves respect, because I believe that respect is earned not given. And if I were to believe both of those the only things left that could earn my respect would be inanimate objects. I’ve never come across a paper clip, a spoon, or a pair of plastic doodads on the end of shoe laces that earned my respect. I’ve owned some cars that I hated, and some that I liked. But on the ones that I liked I was really respecting the manufacturers and engineers that designed and built the car.
And just because you think the same thing as someone else doesn’t mean you’re your thought will have the same priority as theirs. The individuals needs are important, so are the groups needs, so which is more? Or you can take religion for example. For some people religion is the CEO. It drives all their actions, determines who they will and wont associate with, and how to react to each and every situation. For others…not so much. Sometimes religion is more like the janitor. It cleans up after they’ve done something and quietly sits in the background asking them to try to clean up after themselves more often.
And just because you’ve accepted something in the past doesn’t mean you can’t change you mind in the future. I’ve hired lots of concepts I later fired or replaced. The Easter Bunny… Fired. The only mammal that lays eggs is the platypus. And those eggs don’t look like a lava lamp tripping acid vomited on them. Babies come from the stork. Fired, but I must say, myself and many others have been pleased by the storks replacement.
You know how annoying it is when someone else is speaking for you. So why would you let someone else think for you. You can’t be an individual when your brain is nothing more than some patch worked assembly of everyone else. Especially when everyone else seems to be attempting the same thing. Start thinking.
Here’s another quote. “Freedom of thought is the truest freedom anyone has. By its very nature, it is the last to be relinquished.” Do you know who said that? Me. Your religion can be condemned, you can be forced to lip service you allegiance at gun point, you property can burn to ash and blow away, but even if you are physically unable to speak, or hear, or see, or even move you are still able to think. Look at Steven Hawkins. He is no longer physically free to speak, or write, or peacefully assemble, but he is free to think, and does he ever. The only time you are no longer free to think is when you’re unconscious or dead. So while you’re alive use your freedom of thought as best you can. Consider many things. Be selective about the ones you accept and the ones you keep. Expose your self to as much as you can. Don’t be omni-accepting, but be truly open-minded.
